
Jessica-the Work Based Skill & Vocational Training Center
“Jessica vocational training centre” situated at 308/5, 5th block, Mogappair West, Chennai provides training for children with special needs like autism spectrum disorder, learning disability and all developmental paediatric neuro disorders. Children above 14 years with cognitive challenges are trained on various work skills and vocational training is imparted to them to provide a livelihood.
Teaching methods have evolved out of the experience with students and after a thorough research of every students potential and capabilities. Students who have been moved to vocational training are initially assessed on various skills required for independently handling an activity in its entirety. The assessment by itself is a very detailed process using lengthy questionnaires for every section of an activity.
Jessica’s dream project is a retail grocery outlet. We are the pioneers to have introduced retail skill training for children with special needs. This outlet, a vocational training unit of Vikas educational and charitable trust is to train the students in the activities of managing retail shop. The course modules cover the topics in depth with emphasis on the practical aspect of retail operation and will be taught by experts in the field using multisensory inputs. The mock room and on the job training will ensure readiness for job placement. The continuous assessment and modular design of content ensure that each learner will be trained until he/she achieves the employability expectation of the industry
Cooking Activities
Teaching cooking skills to our students is another important activity of Jessica vocational training unit. Training in food related skill development improves fine motor skill as well as upper extremities strengthening. Most activities involve bilateral coordination, fine motor skills and various grasps. This hand-on activity is motivating as the student has finished product and can eat it too.
Other Vocational & Pre vocational Activities
Training is imparted according to the interest, capability and need of the children in the following areas:
- Housekeeping, Cleaning, Mopping, Laundry, Cutting Vegetables, Art, Craft, Numbering, Arranging, Drawing, Painting, Money Concepts, Baking, Shop keeping, and administrative skills, etc….
- Teaching all life-oriented skills which are employable, this program will enhance children with disabilities for an independent living in future.
